North Pole Turn Back Facility

The introduction of a new passenger service by Southern between South Croydon and Shepherds Bush in December 2009 required the facility to turn back trains after leaving Shepherds Bush station. The departure road from the mothballed Eurostar North Pole Depot was identified as appropriate for this purpose and had to be adapted to suit. From a Signalling and Telecoms perspective the project required GRIP 5 design for the proposed changes, including SSI Data changes. Physical works included shortening the existing track circuits and installation of buffer stops just short of the North Pole Depot security gates. Other deliverables included the construction of a new drivers platform and the installation of a new Train Ready to Start Button (TRTS), whilst extending the existing Signal Post Telephone (SPT) on the platform. Modifications included re-positioning of impedance bonds, installation of new equipment into existing location cases, the completion of the corresponding wiring cables, and the construction and installation of new buffer stop lights. All Signalling modifications were tested and commissioned successfully during a 12 hour weekend possession.
